Phoenix does not get ice storms. It is worth saying plainly, because winter-prep advice written for the rest of the country arrives here every year and none of it applies. The low desert has two genuine weather threats to a landscape, and neither involves ice on a branch: radiational frost on still, clear winter nights, and monsoon microbursts in late summer.
Both are survivable with preparation. Both do real damage to properties that were set up as though the Valley had an ordinary winter and an ordinary summer.
Frost nights, not freezes
What happens here in December and January is radiational cooling: on a clear, calm night with dry air, heat radiates away from surfaces and the temperature at plant height drops several degrees below what the forecast says. It is why frost settles in low spots and open lawn while a plant under a patio roof or beside a warm block wall comes through untouched.
The casualties are predictable โ bougainvillea, lantana, young citrus, and anything tropical someone planted because it looked good in April. Frost cloth draped to the ground traps the radiated heat and works; plastic touching foliage conducts cold straight into the leaf and makes it worse. Water the soil the afternoon before a frost night, because damp soil holds and releases far more heat than dry soil does.
The instinct to cut off the blackened growth the next morning is the one to resist. That damaged material shelters the live wood underneath from the next cold night, and pruning stimulates tender new growth into a season that is not finished. Mid-February, once the risk has passed, is the time to clean it up.
Monsoon microbursts are what actually takes trees down
From roughly July into September, collapsing thunderstorm downdrafts hit the Valley with straight-line winds that regularly exceed what a shallow-rooted desert tree can hold against. The trees that fail are the recognisable ones: mesquite and palo verde that have been irrigated like lawn trees, grown fast and top-heavy, and rooted shallow because the water was always at the surface.
Two things prevent most of it. Water deep and well out from the trunk so roots go down and outward instead of circling the emitter. And prune to reduce the sail, not to hollow it out โ stripping the interior and leaving foliage at the branch tips is the most common bad pruning in Phoenix and it makes windthrow more likely, not less. Thinning should be modest and evenly distributed, and it should be finished before the monsoon rather than during it.
Caliche is the layer that drowns trees
Under much of the Valley there is a cemented calcium-carbonate hardpan. A hole dug through topsoil into caliche and backfilled becomes a bathtub: water goes in, does not drain, and the roots sit in it. Trees planted this way fail years later and the failure gets blamed on the weather.
The fix is at planting โ break through the layer or drill a drainage chimney below the root ball, and check by filling the hole with water before the plant goes in and seeing whether it drains. Desert soils are also alkaline and low in organic matter, which is why iron chlorosis shows up on the wrong plant choices no matter how much fertiliser goes down.
Watering under a Colorado River shortage
Phoenix water comes from the Salt and Verde systems through SRP and from the Colorado through the Central Arizona Project, and Colorado River allocations have been reduced under shortage conditions on Lake Mead. The City of Phoenix Water Services Department publishes the current stage of its drought plan and any conservation measures in force. Check phoenix.gov rather than carrying forward last year’s schedule โ this is the one input to a controller most likely to have changed since you set it.
In practice, the efficient desert landscape is drip on a deep, infrequent cycle, with emitters moved outward as trees grow rather than left where they were installed. Turf, where it exists at all, is the first thing to reduce when the stage tightens.
After a monsoon storm
Photograph before anything is moved. A leaning tree that has lifted its root plate is usually worth standing and staking within a day or two if the roots are largely intact โ after that the odds fall away. Resist the urge to have a damaged tree topped; regrowth from topping cuts is weakly attached and will fail in the following season’s storms. Palm fronds and blown debris should come off hardscape quickly, because monsoon rain plus organic litter stains pavers.
The Valley calendar runs backwards from most of the country: structural pruning in late spring before monsoon rather than autumn, frost cloth staged in November, controller changes at the seasonal shift rather than a single summer setting, and a post-monsoon walk for lifted root plates.
